Kathu, also known as “the town under the trees”, is the iron ore capital of the Northern Cape Province. This small, but busy town with accompanying industrial area of Sishen came into being because of ISCOR’s and Kumba’s iron ore mining activity in the Kalahari and connected to it by road, rail and air through nearby Kimberley.

Some of the world’s longest ore trains travel through harsh territory on the Sishen to Saldanha railway to offload their cargo at Saldanha bay. The giant ore trucks bear about 170 to 220 tons of ore at each load.

Kathu is located between Upington and Vryburg with about a two hour drive to each and Kimberley is about a three hour drive away.

There are a variety of attractions in this oasis town that can keep you occupied for a few days. You can take a tour of one of the earths largest single-pit, open-cast mines. Kathu also have a beautiful golf course with a luxurious club house. A small, but well-stocked game reserve adjoins the town as does the Khai-Appel Pleasure Resort, which has camping and caravan facilities as well as fishing and horse riding.

For all you sports people, Kathu also has a Sports Club that offers badminton, golf, squash, swimming, tennis and it has a gymnasium.
