On the Bokveld escarpment, Nieuwoudtville is known for its unique vegetation and the 100 m high Nieuwoudtville Falls on the Doring River.

The town came into being in 1897 and, because of its relatively high rainfall, is known as the “Boland (uplands) of the Karoo”. A small town, its warm, sandstone buildings shelter in a well-treed hollow in a flat landscape covered by wheat, heather and proteas. Eight kilometers west of town, Vanrhyns Pass offers majestic views on the descent to the Namaqualand’s coastal terrace.

Here glacial Rock Striations form the Permian era some 280 million years ago can be seen. Two 50 km four-day hiking trails and two 1-day walks are available to view these astonishing land marks close-up.
Another huge attraction is the Khoisan Rock Paintings in Papkuilsfontein, showing the use of red, yellow, grey and black ocres.

The Matjiesfontein Farm-stall offers traditional lunches, teas and snacks in a historical building surrounded by a wide variety of wild flowers.

The “Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve”, ten kilometres south of town, is a rugged series of deep ravines incised by the Oorlogskloof River. It offers hiking trails and a home to several rare bird species, including booted eagles, black storks and gymnosperms. The reserve spans 5, 577 hectares. Also make sure that you visit the breath-taking Nieuwoudtville Falls, a 100 m natural wonder on the Doring River, and the “Wild Flower Reserve” on Glenlyon, with displays of over 500, 000 endemic Bulbinella.
