Experience the beauty and mystique of the Diamond Coast with it’s rich history and cultural diversity. Diamond mining started here in 1927 on the farm “Kleyne Zee” after Jack Carstens discovered diamonds on the farm the previous year.

Kleinzee has since evolved into a modern town serving one of the world’s foremost alluvial diamond mines, that of De Beers Namaqualand Mines. This legacy continues at Koingnaas, the southern operation of the mine that started in the early seventies.

The Strandveld, courtesy of being within the restricted diamond area, is in pristine condition. The treasures of this area have only recently been opened up for limited tourism and arrangements must be made at least five days in advance.

Kleinzee Nature Reserve, although smaller than four football fields, hosts more than 100 indigenous plant species. The Kleinzee Museum covers the history and present workings of the mine, its natural environment and the history of humankind in the area.

“Seal Colony”, the world-renowned resident colony of more than 450, 000 seals on the admiralty, is protected by the adjacent mining area.

Various tourism packages offer 4×4 and mine tours through the pristine Strandveld, a shipwreck tour, the Buffelsrivier Grace’s Put route and a mine tour showing the workings of a modern alluvial diamond mine (the last only for prearranged group bookings).
