Originally a farm known as “Phizantefontein” (pheasant’s fountain), Loxton was bought from A. E. Loxton by the Dutch Reformed Church in 1899.

The original settlement was founded to serve the sheep-farming community, but extended somewhat more than was originally intended and it became a municipality in 1905.

In March 1961, three-quarters of the town was destroyed by a flash-flood causing the dam above the town to burst, but Loxton has long since recovered!
