Water, Mountains and dense vegetation this is how this beautiful green town, situated on a main route between Gauteng and Namibia / Cape Town via Upington is described, a pleasure and haven for the tourist and the pride of its residents.
Also known as the “Oasis of the Kalahari” Kuruman is the main town in the Kalahari region and is blessed with a permanent and abundant source of water. Ga-Segonyane (little water calabash); commonly known as “Die Oog” delivers 20 million liters of crystal clear water daily.
The water flows from solution cavities in the dolomite Ghaap Plateau and cracks in the mammoth dolerite dykes and sills that thrusts their way into prominence from the earth’s core some 190 million years ago.
The spring nurtures an endangered species of Cichlid fish. Flowing from the spring and the town’s missionary past is its other name, the fountain of Christianity in Africa.
The origin of the town’s name is uncertain, but it is generally accepted as being a variation of the name of an 18th century San leader, Kudumane.
The mining and agricultural activities support Kuruman’s thriving economy Various minerals are mined in the area. Kuruman is also establishing itself as one of the major hunting areas in Southern Africa.
