The town is named after the Koranna leader, Klaas Pofadder, whose grave may today still be seen here.
Pofadder was declared a town in 1936, but the first farms measured out in the district in 1891 was by surveyor Alistone.
Sheep farming is the main infrastructure of the area.
The Dutch Reformed Church that was built in 1912 for £4, 000 and the Catholic Nunnery built in 1921 is some of the historic monuments that can be visited in this quaint little tourist town.
