This spot, originally known to the Tswana people as Tsantsabane and Sibilung, and to the Afrikaans people as Blinkklip, was proclaimed a town on 6 June 1892. It was named after the Reverend J. Postma, a member of the Reformed Church.
The original reason for locating this spot was so that his congregation would have a central point from which to worship. The town is complemented by a dam, and is surrounded by lush greenery, vegetation and sparkling fountains. Economic mainstays of this town are manganese mining and sheep farming.
Temperatures in this town can rise up between 30 – 40ºC in the summer and in winter temperatures can drop to well below freezing point. The days remain generally warmer and pleasant. Humidity in these dryer regions is very low and, of course, whilst out and about in the daylight (even during winter), sunscreen is a must.
Fascinating archeological findings in this area indicate that the Khoisan mined speculate (a type of quartz) from at least 700AD. Interesting attractions that can be seen here include the Howitzer Gun in the Civic Centre which was built in honor of those who had lost their lives in World War II.
A statue of Rev. Dirk Postma and the Reformed Church that was built with blue dolomite in 1908 is also a site to visit in this area. The old Postma’s Diamond Mine, about 45 meters deep, is now filled with clear water and fish.
On the main road to Postmasburg, about 8 km before entering the town at Beeshoek, there is a flat slab of rock with carved cavities and engravings, made with stone implements, and ancient drawings, some of which are estimated to be 120 000 years old – well worth a quick stop!
