This town was established in 1843 and named after Queen Victoria of England. Victoria West marks the beginning of the Diamond Route, lying on the main route from Cape Town to Kimberley.

In 1866 diamond fever was sparked with the discovery of two gems at Hopetown and later the discovery of diamond pipes at Kimberley. The railway from Cape Town was thus turned north but, perplexity, it missed Victoria West by 12km!

Though Victoria West has suffered a devastating flood and drought, it has nevertheless thrived into a quaint little town.

It hosts the only surviving example, in South Africa, of the 1950’s Art Deco Cinemas – the Apollo Theater – which hosts regular film festivals. The Dutch Reformed Church that was built in 1847 now hosts a museum that displays history and archaeological fossils, including those of fossilized fish, reminding the visitor that the Karoo was, 200 million years ago, an inland sea…
