In 1768 Johan Abraham Nel planted an almond tree in honour of his son’s birth. This tree eventually became enormous, and was an oasis in the dry, treeless area of the Karee Mountains.

Originally a Rhenish mission station named Amandelboom (almond tree), and founded in 1845 on the banks of the Sak River, it was a haven for wanderers trekking from spring to spring in search of grazing west of the Karee Mountains. The town was renamed in 1919 after former British Cape Colonial Secretary, Colonel Hampden Willis.

An important road junction linking most Hantam towns, Williston lies in sheep-farming country bound by the Slangberg (Snake Mountain) range in the south and a series of pans in the north.

Corbelled houses built by pioneers using undressed stones, unique to South Africa, is some of the attractions visited here. An early mission station built in 1884 is now used to house a museum. Here excellent specimens of sandstone stones, created by local craftsmen for the use of tomb stones by using handmade tools, can be seen.
